5 Tips To Stay Warm This Winter After A Boiler Breakdown

There is never a good time for your boiler to breakdown and unfortunately the chances are higher during the colder months of the year.

Having an annual boiler service is the best preventative measure you can take however a breakdown beyond your control is always a possibility. Koziwarm offer an emergency boiler repair service however a few hours can seem like a lifetime when you are facing the cold.

Without the luxury of radiators to heat your home, you will need to get creative with methods of staying warm whilst you wait for an engineer. Some of our tips are more obvious than others but we suggest you use a combination to ward away the chill.

  1. Layer Up!

It may be the most obvious on the list but it is the first step to staying warm.

When you have reached the point of no central heating it is essential to maintain the heat that your body already has. Each layer you add provides extra insulation and stops any heat from escaping. These can be layers of clothes or those cosy blankets from the cupboard.

  1. Retain Heat

The heat that you already have in your house will soon become your best friend so you will want to make sure you do not loose it.

It is likely that the biggest source of heat loss from your home is through the windows. Keeping your curtains closed, particularly during the night, can be extremely beneficial in minimising this loss. However if it is a sunny day then opening the curtains will allow for the natural heat of the sun to warm your house.

If you have draught excluders now is the time to use them! If you do not then an easy substitute is a rolled up towel to stop that precious heat escaping under any doors or cracks.

  1. Eat Warm

A hot hearty meal is amazing during winter even when your boiler is running smoothly. So having a warm meal during a boiler break down is a fantastic way of staying warm from the inside.

It can be as simple as a bowl of soup or a cup of tea but it is a great heat source – especially for your hands to hold!

  1. Use Traditional Sources of Heat

Having a broken boiler can bring you to return to the traditional methods of staying warm.

Using a hot water bottle is a great way of keeping warm when you are not on the move. Try placing one in your bed an hour before getting in and it will be a much more inviting space.

If you are fortunate enough to have a traditional log burner or open fire then now is the time to use it. Keep all doors closed to maximise the effects.

  1. Use An Electric Heater

Using an electric heater is a last option as it can be rather expensive. If you decide to use one then ensure all doors and windows are closed or covered to feel the true benefits and keep the cost to a minimum.

These are a fantastic short-term fix whilst you wait for your engineer to arrive. Staying warm whilst you wait for an emergency engineer can be a stressful time. Making sure you follow these 5 simple, yet essential steps can make this process a little more comfortable.
